Project Lifesaver is a nationwide program designed to safely locate, in a timely manner, children and adults who may wander. These children and adults may wander due to various conditions, including autism, Alzheimer's, and other brain-related injuries and illnesses. The participant wears a transmitter bracelet around his or her wrist or ankle that will relay a unique signal should that person wander. When wandering occurs, the caregiver notifies emergency personnel and those individuals are able to quickly locate the wanderer b/c of the unique signal in the bracelet.
Several members of the Cary Pilot Club are trained in maintaining the bracelets of 5 local residents, which is crucial to the Project Lifesaver program. After attending specialized sessions, our members (currently along with the Pilot Club of Raleigh and the Wake County Sheriff's Department) enroll approved persons and then explain the program to both the caregiver and the participant. The bracelet is then placed on the individual and our members replace the battery monthly or as needed. In the near future, the Cary Police Department, along with the Pilot Club of Cary, will handle Project Lifesaver for Cary and Western Wake County. The need for trained individuals will increase as a result and our club will be more involved.
